Food for thought!

Animals in nature spend lots of time hunting and foraging for food. Dogs these days have great lives, they don't however get to use their hunting and problem solving skills, as much as they should. we hand them there food in a bowl.

Many dogs spend long hours at home alone with nothing to do, while their owner is at work or out with friends. (remeber that mental stimulation will wear your dog out twice as fast as physical stimulation and that a tired dog is a good dog.)

In order to keep dogs from getting too bored or destructive (e.g. chewing inappropriate items or digging holes in the yard), I recommend enrichment toys (food).  this can not replace physical exercise or training but the food toys will help keep your dog happy and out of trouble. Food enrichment toys also help with seperation anxiety or avoiding seperation anxiety as your dog learns you leaving is a good thing because they get a yummy treat. It will also help slow there eatting down and can help with intergestion problems or "woofing" it down. :)

There's really no good reason that a dog needs to eat his meals out of a food bowl, so you can feed all his meals in food toys if you want or by simply "scattering" it out along the floor or yard. "kibble toss"

Freeze water and chicken broth with toys, carrots, treats, etc to keep dogs from getting bored and overheated in the backyard.

You can always make some cheeper alternatives at home for example RSPCA uses empty 2 and 3 ltr milk bottles with the lid off (and little blue rim so that they can not choke) filled with there brekfast amount of kibble. :)

Available at most major pet stores or online

Classic Kong (shown left)

This is the most basic model of Kong.  It looks like a beehive but it's a thick rubber toy that is hollow in the middle, allowing you to stuff it with food.  I recommend mixing a raw natural dog food like "BARF" with dog muesli
For high drive dogs, you can even freeze the whole thing so that it will take them longer to get the food out.

This is my dogs faviourite because it is so differant everytime he uses it. They are great for very smart dogs as they can not figure out the pattern! :)

The Wobbler is a KONG-shaped food dispensing toy and feeder that sits upright until pushed with a dog's paw or nose, then dispenses treats as it wobbles, spins and rolls. The unpredictable movement keeps the toy challenging, even for seasoned Wobbler users. Use the Wobbler as an alternative to a dog bowl, and help to extend meal time and exercise your dog.

You can see many more if you research it eg:
